New Hampshire, 1777.  The British are coming, it is the Year of the Hangman, it is the stroke of noon - will our hero hang for his daring self-sacrifice?  How could a play so American be Shavian?

In 1897, George Bernard Shaw had his first great theatrical success - not with a witty comedy in the West End - but in New York, where a melodrama and tribute to the American spirit called The Devil's Disciple ran 62 performances and then went on a popular mid-west tour for an entire season.

At the Metropolitan we hope to bring you an unforgettable evening of Shaw's wit mixed with romance and action, in the words of the author, "producing swiftly and certainly on the individual the results which in actual life it only produces on the race in the course of many centuries . . . and has, in truth, some genuine novelty in it."
